  1. That aphorism of yours immediately reminded me a paragraph from “Naked Economics” (a very nice read btw by Charles Wheelan): “Our unanalyzed decisions can cause harm for some others. That is, willing to buy some furniture made of some natural wood, encourages some people to destroy some rare tree forests in some places of the world. Our world! Causing undesirable and irreversible consequences”. This is not word-by-word quotation, however, the meaning remains the same.

    1. Indeed. There is also a well known phenomenon – the Tragedy of Commons which is defined by Wikipedia as “dilemma arising from the situation in which multiple individuals, acting independently, and solely and rationally consulting their own self-interest, will ultimately deplete a shared limited resource even when it is clear that it is not in anyone’s long-term interest for this to happen” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons). So our world is full of the tragedy of commons.
By the way, Elinor Ostrom was awarded Nobel Prize in Economics in 2009 for her works on Tragedy of Commons (“for her analysis of economic governance, especially the commons”).

      1. Is there any way to make order in that process, so that when people act individually they end up making positive externality effect for society et all? How to solve that dilemma? any ideas?

      2. I think “Sustainable Development” or “Sustainability Management” is one of the emerging disciplines that should help people to act in a way that they wont harm others/future generation.
