Liberal mind and universities

I noticed that most people who work or study in universities, especially in Western universities are liberal minded individuals. Interesting: do they go to the universities because of their liberal mind, or are they become liberal minded because of the university setting?

  1. I think most of these guys who work or study abroad more or less liberal than others before going abroad. Liberal-mindedness maybe became a motivation to challenge themselves outside the home country. Moreover, while the outside of the country, they will have more chances to compare things, the situation which will make them more liberal on other conservatively held notions.

  2. I don’t agree with your proposition. I met a lot of conservative people in the Western academia. Especially, most of them are very conventional.

    1. Well, perhaps we had different academics around, or looked at the things differently, or are speaking about different things. Apart from that the academic field may have a role. I mostly contacted with social scientists and, as I said earlier, found many of them as quite liberals. By the way, one can be conventional in everyday life and liberal in political views.
