Confidence of TV presenters

Comparing different TV presenters and talk-show hosts in different countries and languages, I noticed that the American TV stars are the most confident ones. They speak more freely, with less tension and have bigger smile. Perhaps that is a part of a culture and represents a role model behavioural pattern. Any way, that kind of a TV behaviour is helping the American TV programs and shows to be more attractive for may people (first of all for Americans, of course).

  1. I’ve never been to America, my knowledge of Americans can hardly be described as representative. But from what I could gather with that few Americans I know, that they are generally too confident, sometimes to the extend of being arrogant and ignorant. Shy, humble and polite people are often described like losers there.

    1. Yes, sometimes that is a case. But we should understand that the whole system of upbringing children in America, the ideology of socialization there is directed towards the development of individual responsibility, personal accountability and effectiveness (the motto: “Everybody for himself”). According to the famous research of the Dutch scholar Geert Hofstede ( http://www.geerthofstede.nl ) on cultural differences, the Americans are number one nation in the world in term of individualism (opposite of collectivism). In other words, the Americans are the most individualistic people in the world. That, of course, affects people’s behaviour, their relationship between each other and their self-presentation. For some foreigners the behaviour of a typical American person (especially a young individual) might be seen as too lauder and even arrogant. However, there is another side of the coin: many Americans are very entrepreneurial, self-confident, quite optimistic and responsible, can take a risk and don’t blame everybody else in case of personal failure.

  2. Don’t you think that the confidence of a TV presenter is an indicator of the freedom of expression in that country? If yes, than we can conclude that the American media is the most independent.

    1. Well, the American media is one of the freest in the world, of course, and that is affecting on the behaviour of the media people including TV presenters. However when I described a behavioural confidence of the most American TV presenters, I meant first of all a cultural phenomenon. That is connected with the cultural expectations and culturally desirable behavioural models.
