‘Construction of the past’ seems particularly actual today in view of increasingly changing international landscape. Different interpretations and narratives of the past are recalled in attempts to make sense of the socio-political and cultural boundaries, questioning and compromising on the lessons of the past, in some cases trying to re-negotiate legacies or aspects of legacies of the past. I think two categories of ‘historicization’ can be roughly distinguished in this context. Constructing the past in ways in which ‘the past’ is manifested in rejection, a certain point rather not ‘to return’ to, and constructing the past in ways in which ‘the past’ is glorified, a certain orientation for returning. Yet both sides claim to be learning from history.
